The Promise of Biotechnology
Biotechnology is a dynamic
discipline that draws upon many areas of biology and chemistry to explore
the world of life for the betterment of humankind and the environment.
Research in biotechnology involves the spectrum of life, from microbes
to plants and animals. Advances in recombinant DNA science have expanded
our ability to produce products, such as the human insulin used by diabetics,
that enhance the quality of life. Research involving plants has revolutionized
agriculture, allowing for the more efficient production of food to feed
a hungry world and for the decrease in the use of insecticides and herbicides.
Companies involved with various aspects of biotechnology are found in many
countries and within many states in the United States, including New Hampshire,
where it has become an impourant component of our economy. It is
not an exaggeration to say that the 21st century is dawning as the century
of biotechnology. The B.S. in Biotechnology program at Plymouth State
is at the forefront of the biotechnology revolution and prepares students
for entry into this dynamic enterprise.
