The Biotechnology Program
The study of biotechnology includes not only biology, but also involves a strong foundation in mathematics, chemistry and physics.  Rooted in molecular biology, the study of biotechnology is at the cutting edge of modern biology.  In the first year students participate in a unique introductory laboratory research experience involving a variety of selected projects in a course designed by Department of Natural Science faculty.  Another strong feature of the program is the requirement that students complete a senior research project.  The project involves a planning phase during the course Introduction to Research.  Once the planning phase is completed a full semester is devoted to research under the supervision of biotechnology faculty, and when completed the project results are presented at a student seminar.  Working both independently and in small groups, students gain valuable experience that positions them for success in employment or further study.  In addition, students may participate in summer internships to gain further experience.  Students who have studied biotechnology at Plymouth State have gone on after graduation to secure positions in laboratories at biotechnolgy companies, while others have contintued their education in graduate school in masters and doctoral degree programs.
