Mike started studying pathogens and human disease when he investigated P. aeruginosa pathogenesis during lung infections in cystic fibrosis patients at the University of Hawaii for his Ph.D. Mike recalls two highlights during his studies there: (1) meeting 4-time NFL Pro-Bowler Boomer Esiason and (2) processing up to 40 ml of fresh sputum. In 2008, Mike became a post-doctoral researcher at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, turning his focus onto another bodily fluid, investigating the pathogenesis of Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of severe watery diarrhea. He continues his research on V. cholerae pathogenesis at PSU. Outside of science, Mike is an avid professional amateur fly fisherman and “[is] only doing science until he gets his PGA Tour card.”

Kyle is currently a junior at PSU, majoring in Biotechnology and minoring in Technical Mathematics and Chemistry. Originally from Bowie, Maryland (a suburb adjacent to Washington, DC), Kyle found his way up to New Hampshire by way of Upstate NY, where he played junior hockey and was a part-time student, and his impressive hockey skills got him recruited as a Panther on the University hockey team at PSU. Naturally an inquisitive person, Kyle has always been fascinated with science. With a little guidance from Dr. Son, Kyle has discovered his passion for studying microbiology, a career he plans to pursue, starting with graduate school. As a student athlete, when Kyle is not in the classroom or lab, you can find him either at the ice arena or in the gym. Off campus and during his spare time, Kyle loves to travel, experiencing what else the world has to offer. Last summer, he spent a month in China and Tibet, and he routinely vacations down in Mexico, where he hopes to host annual lab retreats. But for now, Kyle is excited about joining Dr. Son's research team and cannot wait to make a difference.

Originally from Standish, ME, Jordan now calls Boyd 215 her new home. Currently a junior majoring in Biology at PSU, Jordan was originally recruited out of high school as a field hockey star. With a promising career in graduate school and medicine, Jordan now focuses most, soon to be all, of her time in the lab conducting research on cholera as an official iC.R.A.P. Team member. When she's not getting lost in protocols and bacterial cultures, Jordan enjoys getting lost along the many beautiful hiking trails New Hampshire has to offer. Having a natural heart for helping those in need, Jordan has been to the Dominican Republic the previous two years on service missions. Her patience for helping others will certainly be tested when she realizes who's lab she has joined and who’s she’s working with.

Bailey joins Dr. Son's lab as a senior majoring in Biology. Her future plans post-graduation include attending graduate school focusing on marine biology. As a New Hampshire native, she naturally enjoys all four seasons and enjoys being outside… from inside the lab. Her passion for science and the outdoors, especially marine biology, came at an early age starting with a love of all kinds of sharks. But after taking the microbiology course, her passion for science grew, down to a microscopic level, and now includes the the wonderful world of bacteria. When time permits, which is hardly ever now, Bailey enjoys volunteering at the New England Aquarium, swimming (not necessarily at the Aquarium), snowmobiling, hiking, and dancing.

PJ is a junior at PSU majoring in Biology and contemplating a Chemistry minor. Being raised in Greece, she is bilingual, speaking both Greek and English. PJ’s interest in research was sparked early on while watching TV shows, and was then cemented when she became an assistant in a microbiology lab at the early age of 14. With a brief stint shadowing in Dr. Son’s lab, PJ is excited about becoming an official iC.R.A.P. member and getting her hands wet with real work. With plans for graduate school in her mind, PJ is planning on working hard in the lab, putting off sleeping, leaving little time for her favorite hobby reading. When she does get to see sunlight, I’m sure she’ll be able to follow her animal-loving heart and pet every animal she can find.
