Revision and Editing
Students often have trouble distinguishing between revision and
editing and many have little experience revising their own work.
Sometimes I ask them to brainstorm differences between the two processes,
just so that I am sure they understand the distinction. These
revision exercises are designed to expand the students’ concept of
revision.
The editing exercises can be fun, if done in a spirit of play. I
often use them as a lead into collaborative work and have students work in
teams. Everyone has to correct their own papers and everyone must explain
their corrections, but they must all agree on the same answers. Sometimes
I give prizes.
