Teaching and Research
- I
am an experienced teacher of management accounting and operations management.
- My
newer teaching interests include entrepreneurial ventures, and
international business, and labor management (which I have taught twice
recently at Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania).
- My
research,
writing and executive programs focus chiefly on manufacturing strategy and
performance measurement in manufacturing (for a pithy little thought piece
on the latter subject, see “The Principle of Slack Ropes”). A followup article with specific findings and
recommendations on manufacturing performance measurements is “Learning the Ropes: How to tell when you’ve found
an Effective Performance Measurement System for Manufacturing.”
Recently I have begun pursuing the hypothesis that improved
inventory practices in American manufacturing contributed measurably to
the steadiness of the economic growth of the 1990s. For more on that idea, see "Operating at the Rate of Consumption", which was subsequently published (in
2010) by INFER (International Network for Economic Research) in the U.K.
